The rally brought together several prominent opposition leaders and thousands of supporters who raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the country’s electoral system and the revision of voter lists.
The opposition parties accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of failing to ensure transparency in the electoral process. They also raised concerns over the alleged deletion of voters’ names during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Opposition Demands Action Against Chief Election Commissioner
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge strongly criticised Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during the protest.
Kharge accused the Election Commission leadership of working under pressure from the central government and raised questions about the management and revision of electoral rolls.
The opposition leaders put forward several key demands, including:
- Removal or resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
- Immediate suspension of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
- A review of the 2023 law governing the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.
- Greater transparency in the preparation and revision of voter lists.
The opposition claimed that alleged irregularities in voter registration could affect people’s democratic rights and weaken public confidence in elections.
Rahul Gandhi, Kharge and Mamata Banerjee Target Government
Several senior opposition leaders addressed the gathering and criticised the functioning of the central government and the Election Commission.
Rahul Gandhi said the opposition was united in its fight to protect democracy and citizens’ voting rights. He stressed that every eligible citizen must have the right to vote without interference.
Mallikarjun Kharge criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing the government of avoiding questions about electoral transparency. He also defended the opposition’s campaign against alleged irregularities in voter lists.
Mamata Banerjee, Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister, questioned the fairness of the electoral process. She accused the authorities of weakening democratic institutions and constitutional values.
Akhilesh Yadav, president of the Samajwadi Party, also criticised the voter list revision process. He said the alleged deletion of voters’ names was a serious concern for democratic representation.
Opposition Takes Legal and Political Steps
The Ramlila Maidan rally was part of the INDIA bloc’s wider political campaign over electoral transparency.
Apart from organising public demonstrations, opposition parties have also pursued legal and institutional options to raise their concerns.
The alliance has sought greater accountability from the Election Commission and demanded clear explanations about the voter list revision process.
The opposition leaders believe that transparent elections are essential for maintaining public trust in democratic institutions.
Heavy Security Arrangements in New Delhi
The large gathering led to extensive security arrangements around Ramlila Maidan and nearby areas of the national capital.
According to the information provided, more than 4,000 security personnel were deployed around Ramlila Maidan, Minto Road and important routes to manage the crowd and maintain law and order.
The rally also raised concerns about possible traffic disruptions and the impact on nearby businesses.
The INDIA bloc’s “Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao” campaign has brought electoral transparency back into the national political debate. The opposition has indicated that it will continue raising questions about voter list revisions and the functioning of the Election Commission.
The ruling establishment and the Election Commission face growing political scrutiny as opposition parties demand answers over their allegations.
