Why Is the Opposition Protesting Against SIR?

The INDIA bloc has raised concerns about alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls, including claims that eligible voters could be removed from the lists.

Opposition parties argue that any wrongful deletion of voters could affect citizens’ voting rights and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

They have called for greater transparency and accountability from the Election Commission, while demanding assurances that eligible voters will not be excluded from electoral rolls.

The Election Commission’s procedures and the opposition’s allegations remain central to the ongoing political dispute.

MPs Face Barricades During March

As opposition lawmakers began their march from Parliament House towards Rashtrapati Bhavan, security personnel put up multiple barricades along parts of the route in central Delhi.

Several INDIA bloc leaders, including members of the Congress, Trinamool Congress and other opposition parties, reportedly staged a sit-in at Vijay Chowk after encountering police restrictions.

At the same time, a delegation of opposition MPs proceeded to meet President Droupadi Murmu to submit their memorandum.

The delegation sought presidential intervention, arguing that the concerns surrounding electoral roll revisions required urgent attention to protect democratic principles and voters’ rights.

Opposition Demands Action Against Election Commission

The opposition has repeatedly questioned the functioning of the Election Commission and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Its leaders argue that the SIR exercise requires greater scrutiny to ensure that electoral rolls remain accurate and that no eligible voter loses the right to vote.

The controversy has become a wider political dispute over electoral transparency, institutional independence and confidence in the election process.

The Election Commission’s position and the legal framework governing the revision process are important to assessing these claims. Allegations of wrongdoing should not be treated as established facts without supporting evidence.

Political Tensions Continue Across India

The march follows a series of opposition demonstrations in New Delhi and other parts of the country over the SIR exercise.

The INDIA bloc has indicated that it intends to continue its campaign through further protests and public outreach, keeping electoral transparency at the centre of its political agenda.

The ruling side has rejected the opposition’s allegations, maintaining that election procedures are conducted under the applicable legal and administrative framework.

The dispute is likely to remain a significant political issue as opposition parties press for changes and the Election Commission faces demands to address concerns over voter list revisions.
