Mehbooba Mufti Questions Eviction Notice to 120-Year-Old Heritage Mosque

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday questioned the government over an eviction notice issued to a 120-year-old heritage mosque near the Prime Minister’s residence.
Mufti alleged that the notice contradicted the public display of respect for Islamic heritage during visits to mosques in Muslim countries.
In a post on X, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister criticised what she described as a difference between appreciating mosques abroad and treating Muslim religious heritage in India.
“Visiting mosques in Muslim countries, praising their grandeur and projecting respect for Islamic sentiments and heritage,” she wrote.
However, she questioned why a historic mosque near the Prime Minister’s residence was facing an eviction notice that could threaten its existence.
Mufti described the situation as a glaring contradiction, arguing that admiration for mosques in other countries should be matched by respect for the religious sentiments and heritage of India’s Muslim community.
Her remarks have brought attention to the eviction notice and raised questions about the future of the 120-year-old heritage mosque.
