J&K Weather Update: Rain to Ease After Friday, Fresh Wet Spell From July 28 With Flood and Landslide Risk

According to MeT Director Mukhtar Ahmad, there is little chance of any major or continuous rainfall between July 25 and July 27. However, the next weather system is expected to bring fresh rain from July 28, with the possibility of heavy showers, flash floods, landslides and mudslides in several areas.
Ahmad said the department’s earlier forecast remained accurate, with widespread rainfall recorded across Jammu and Kashmir over the past few days.
He noted that South Kashmir, the upper catchment areas, the Chenab Valley, and districts along the Pir Panjal range have experienced heavy rainfall over the last two to three days. Rainfall resumed again on Friday morning and is expected to continue until the afternoon before gradually easing.
The upcoming weather system is likely to affect the Jammu plains, Chenab Valley, and the Pir Panjal region. Parts of the Kashmir Valley may also receive light to moderate rain, with isolated areas likely to witness intense showers.
The MeT Department has warned that the fresh spell could trigger landslides, mudslides, shooting stones and flash floods, especially in vulnerable locations.
Ahmad said water levels in rivers and streams had risen significantly because of the recent rain, although the latest information from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department shows that levels are now gradually falling.
He advised people to stay away from rivers, streams and other water bodies where water levels remain high.
The MeT Director also urged travellers, transporters, tourists and local residents to avoid unnecessary travel to hilly areas until weather conditions improve, as the risk of landslides and falling rocks remains high.
He further warned that continuous rainfall has left the soil heavily saturated, increasing the danger of mud houses collapsing in vulnerable areas.
Ahmad appealed to the public to follow all weather advisories issued by the administration and the Meteorological Department to stay safe during the changing weather conditions.
