Sopore: Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on Sunday said the alleged regional imbalance in the issuance of Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) certificates should be examined carefully to ensure that no section of society faces injustice.
Speaking to reporters in Sopore, Rather said he had directed the government to examine the issue and identify areas where improvements could be made. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
“Yes, I have directed the government to examine the same wherever there is scope of improvement to avoid injustice to any section of society,” Rather said.He stressed that the matter should be looked into seriously so that the existing system does not result in unfairness to any section of society.
The issue was raised during the recent Autumn Session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly by Peoples Conference president and Handwara MLA Sajad Gani Lone, who moved a Calling Attention Motion concerning the alleged regional disparity in the issuance of EWS certificates.
According to figures presented in the Assembly, 26,544 EWS certificates were issued across Jammu and Kashmir over the past two years, including 24,058 in Jammu division and 2,486 in Kashmir division. Lone questioned whether the existing criteria adequately reflected economic conditions across both regions.
Lone has called for a uniform and rational definition of economically weaker sections across the Union Territory and sought a review of the criteria used to determine EWS eligibility.
The government, however, has maintained that EWS certificates are issued by Tehsildars according to the eligibility criteria prescribed by the Social Welfare Department.
Rather’s latest direction indicates that the issue will now be examined further, with the stated objective of identifying possible improvements and ensuring equitable treatment.
