Bengaluru: A political and civil-society demonstration is being held at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Thursday, with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) organising a People’s Tribunal over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, followed by a symbolic “Chappal Protest”. The programme, which began around 10:30 am, has brought together CJP members, youth organisations, civil-society representatives and people who say they were affected by the recent revision of electoral rolls in Karnataka.

Concerns over SIR and voter deletions

The People’s Tribunal is focused on allegations by some voters that their names were wrongly removed from electoral rolls during the SIR exercise.

Organisers say people from different parts of Karnataka will share their experiences and raise concerns about alleged wrongful exclusions from the voter lists. The groups are demanding that the deletions made during the SIR process be scrapped and that the pre-SIR electoral rolls be retained. The Times of India

The allegations are being made by the protesters and organisers and should not be treated as established findings of the Election Commission.

Dhruv Rathee and Prakash Raj join the programme

YouTuber and social commentator Dhruv Rathee is participating in the Bengaluru event. Actor Prakash Raj has also extended his support and is expected to participate alongside CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, co-convener Ashutosh Ranka and spokesperson Saurav Das. Hindustan Times

Rathee’s participation was announced by Prakash Raj ahead of the event, with organisers describing him as a special guest. Reports said Rathee had also reached Bengaluru ahead of the protest. Hindustan Times

CJP demands CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation

The organisers are also demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging irregularities in the electoral-roll revision process.

The demand comes amid wider protests against the Election Commission’s handling of voter-list revisions. Opposition politicians and civil-society groups have also raised concerns over the issue, while the allegations remain contested. Reuters

What is the ‘Chappal Protest’?

The “Chappal Protest” is scheduled to follow the People’s Tribunal at Freedom Park.

According to CJP co-convener Ashutosh Ranka, the demonstration is being held in solidarity with women and follows concerns raised by protesters over the treatment of women journalists during recent demonstrations. ReporterWorld

The Bengaluru programme is part of a broader CJP campaign that has included protests in other cities and further mobilisation planned in Delhi.

Key point for your News of Kashmir article

I would not write “protesters proved mass voter deletions” or “SIR caused widespread disenfranchisement” as a fact. A safer and more journalistically accurate formulation is “protesters allege wrongful voter deletions” or “organisers have raised concerns over voter-list exclusions.” This keeps the report factual and avoids presenting a political allegation as an established finding.
