Imran Khan Asked to Leave India by October 28 After Mumbai Protest

Mumbai Police has reportedly issued a ‘Leave India’ notice to Bollywood actor Imran Khan, nephew of superstar Aamir Khan, directing him to leave the country by October 28 following his participation in a protest in Mumbai. Reports state that the actor holds an American passport.

The actor participated in a demonstration at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai, where protesters demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

According to reports, action has been initiated against Imran Khan under Sections 29 and 7 of the Immigration Act over allegations that he took part in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen.

Khan was detained by Mumbai Police on Saturday while participating in the demonstration.

Following his detention, the actor shared a photograph on social media that appeared to show him sitting inside a police van. He accompanied the picture with the caption, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”

Speaking to the media, Khan said he had attended the protest as a citizen of Mumbai and was not there to raise any specific demands.

“I don’t have demands. I am here as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city. I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted. Why are people’s voices being suppressed? That is why I am here,” the actor said.

BJP Leader Kirit Somaiya Demands Arrest and Deportation

Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya had demanded the immediate arrest and deportation of Imran Khan over his participation in the Mumbai protest.

Somaiya alleged that the actor had violated Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) provisions and visa conditions by taking part in what he described as an illegal political demonstration.

The BJP leader said he had submitted evidence to the police concerning Khan’s speeches during the protest and his earlier public remarks. He called for immediate action, alleging that the actor had misused his OCI status.

Speaking to the media, Somaiya accused Khan of displaying what he described as “political extremism”. He said the actor was an American citizen holding an OCI card and alleged that his participation in the demonstration amounted to a misuse of that status.

“The citizens of India cannot tolerate the political extremism that Imran Khan has been displaying during his recent stay in the country. He is an American citizen holding an OCI card, yet he has attempted to misuse his status. Today, we submitted all proofs and evidence to the police regarding his conduct—specifically the speeches he delivered during the protest and his earlier comments,” Somaiya said.

The development has brought attention to the legal questions surrounding the participation of foreign nationals and OCI cardholders in political demonstrations in India. However, the allegations made against Khan and the legal basis for the notice should be distinguished from any final determination by the authorities.
