Omar Abdullah Moves Resolution Seeking Full Restoration of J&K Statehood

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday moved a resolution in the Legislative Assembly seeking the complete restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

He said that if the commitment had been described as “Modi Ka Wada”, it should also have been implemented.
Omar highlights administrative concerns
The Chief Minister also spoke about the administrative difficulties he said were linked to Jammu and Kashmir continuing as a Union Territory.
He specifically referred to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), one of the region’s major healthcare institutions.
Omar said files related to SKIMS do not come to the elected government, which creates difficulties in taking decisions.
He said Health Minister Sakina Itoo was unable to take decisions on certain matters concerning the institute.
Omar also raised concerns about the way SKIMS finances are handled.
He said that while the Finance Department provides funds to the institute, the government does not have sufficient control over how that money is spent.
“I, as Finance Minister, give them the budget, but how that money is spent, we don’t know,” Omar said.
Statehood resolution sparks uproar
Omar called for a detailed discussion on the resolution and said the restoration of statehood was an issue that crossed party lines.
However, the resolution quickly led to a heated exchange inside the Assembly.
BJP members accused the government of “befooling” the people of Jammu and Kashmir, while members of the National Conference and Congress responded with slogans including “Sada Haq Ithey Rakh”.
National Conference members also raised slogans demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
The situation became more heated when a majority of BJP legislators entered the Well of the House, leading to a noisy confrontation between members.
As the disruption continued, Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather adjourned the House for half an hour.
The resolution has once again brought the issue of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir to the centre of political debate in the Legislative Assembly.
