His remarks come amid growing differences within the party following the recent cabinet expansion by the Omar Abdullah-led government, which reportedly left several legislators dissatisfied over the allocation of ministerial positions and the decision-making process.

Speaking to reporters, Farooq Abdullah said the party leadership had held discussions with the concerned legislators and acknowledged that their grievances were genuine.

“We have spoken to them. Their problems were genuine and they were heard properly. We will take some steps quickly and some steps slowly,” he said.

Cabinet Expansion Triggers Discontent Within National Conference

Internal differences within the National Conference became increasingly visible after the recent expansion and reshuffle of the Council of Ministers. A group of nearly 19 to 24 legislators reportedly held successive closed-door meetings in Srinagar to discuss their concerns over the party’s functioning and representation in the government.

The dissatisfied lawmakers are understood to have expressed disappointment over the lack of adequate consultation before the cabinet appointments, besides raising questions about regional representation and the distribution of political responsibilities.

Their concerns reportedly extend beyond ministerial berths, with several legislators seeking greater coordination between the party organisation and the government.

MLAs Raise Questions Over Administrative Influence

Among the issues reportedly discussed by the legislators are the influence of certain political functionaries and advisers in administrative decision-making, the role of elected representatives in governance, and the need for stronger communication between party leadership and lawmakers.

Some legislators have also called for greater internal democracy and a more consultative approach to organisational and administrative decisions.

Despite the growing differences, the dissenting lawmakers have maintained that their initiative is aimed at addressing internal shortcomings and strengthening the party rather than destabilising the Omar Abdullah government.

Farooq and Omar Abdullah Move to Defuse Tensions

Farooq Abdullah, accompanied by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, reportedly intervened to address the concerns raised by the dissatisfied legislators.

The party leadership has indicated that some issues will be resolved immediately, while others may require more time and organisational adjustments.

The intervention is seen as an attempt to prevent the internal differences from escalating into a larger political challenge for the ruling party.

The National Conference is also facing expectations to maintain unity while pursuing its broader political agenda, particularly its demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood and the protection of its constitutional and political rights.

Party Unity Faces Crucial Test

Although Farooq Abdullah has ruled out speculation of an impending rebellion, the concerns raised by a sizeable group of legislators highlight the challenges facing the National Conference leadership.

How effectively the party addresses the grievances of its elected representatives, balances regional and organisational interests, and improves coordination between the government and party structure could prove crucial in maintaining unity within the ruling party.

For now, the leadership appears determined to contain the differences through dialogue and gradual corrective measures.
