CUKashmir Commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s 157th Birth Anniversary with Seminar on Peace and Non-Violence

The event was held alongside Swachhata Hi Seva 2026, highlighting the continuing relevance of Gandhian values including truth, compassion, service, peace and non-violence in contemporary society.

Addressing the gathering, CUKashmir Vice Chancellor Prof. A. Ravinder Nath spoke about the practical relevance of Gandhian philosophy for students, educational institutions and society. He stressed the importance of resolving grievances through peaceful means and said Gandhi’s approach to non-violence provides a framework for addressing differences without confrontation.

Prof. Nath also linked Gandhian thought with experiential learning, environmental protection and community service. Referring to students’ participation in academic and cleanliness initiatives, he highlighted the importance of Swachhata Abhiyan and appreciated the efforts of Safai Mitras in maintaining a clean environment across the university campuses.

He said educational institutions have a responsibility to create knowledge, share it and apply it for the benefit of society. He also encouraged students and educators to draw inspiration from Gandhian ideals while responding constructively to changing global challenges.

Registrar Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir, Controller of Examinations Dr. Kaiser Giri, heads and coordinators of departments, faculty members, administrative staff, scholars and students attended the programme.

In his keynote address, Prof. Prasad Gollanapalli, National President and Managing Trustee of the Gandhi King Foundation, said Gandhi’s philosophy transcends time, geography and generations.

He noted that the United Nations’ recognition of Gandhi’s birthday as the International Day of Non-Violence reflects the global significance of his message. Prof. Gollanapalli said truth and non-violence remained central to Gandhi’s teachings and stressed that a genuine culture of peace begins with inner peace.

He emphasised that non-violence should extend beyond philosophical discussion and become part of everyday life. Referring to the global influence of Gandhian principles, he highlighted the contributions of Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela and their use of non-violent approaches in addressing social and political challenges.

Speaking on the occasion, Mohammad Shahid Khan, Coordinator and spokesperson of the Gandhi King Foundation–J&K Chapter, described Gandhi as not only an individual but also an enduring philosophy. He said Gandhian ideals of peace, truth and non-violence continue to hold relevance despite changing circumstances.

Khan also called upon young people to look beyond material pursuits, develop self-discipline and contribute positively to society.

In his welcome address, Dr. Muhammad Ayoub Mattoo, State President of the Gandhi King Foundation–J&K Chapter, highlighted the shared legacy of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. as symbols of non-violent resistance, truth and peaceful transformation.

He said their principles of Ahimsa, truth and peaceful resistance continue to provide meaningful approaches to addressing divisions and conflicts.

During the programme, students who performed exceptionally well and actively participated in Swachhata-related activities were felicitated. Winners of the Zero Waste Sports Competition for Safai Mitras were also honoured.

Safai Mitras were recognised for their contribution to maintaining cleanliness across the CUKashmir campuses.

Sr Asst Prof. Dr. Firdous Ahmad Sofal conducted the proceedings, while Dean DSW Dr. Jehirul Islam delivered the vote of thanks.
