Afghanistan Claims 28 Fighters Killed in Nuristan Clash, Pakistan Rejects Allegations
Afghanistan’s Defence Ministry said on Sunday that its forces had killed 28 fighters and wounded 32 others in the eastern province of Nuristan after a group allegedly crossed the border from Pakistan. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
The ministry claimed that the group included ISIS militants and former members of Afghanistan’s security forces. It also alleged that Pakistani militias supported the fighters during the clashes.
Pakistan’s Information Ministry rejected the allegations, calling them “frivolous, baseless and devoid of any truth”. It denied that Pakistani security forces or intelligence agencies had taken part in the fighting, recruited or trained former Afghan security personnel, or supported ISIS or other militant groups in Afghanistan.
According to Afghanistan’s Defence Ministry, the fighters entered Kamdesh district in Nuristan, near the Pakistani border, on Saturday with the intention of carrying out attacks. Afghan forces launched an operation against them, after which the surviving fighters reportedly fled towards the Pakistani border.
The Afghan ministry further alleged that Pakistani armed personnel and militia members had coordinated with the fighters but withdrew once the fighting began. It also accused Pakistani intelligence officials of taking former Afghan security personnel to Pakistan under the pretext of providing assistance, training them and later sending them towards Nuristan.
Pakistan denied the accusations and said Afghanistan had provided no evidence to support its claims. Islamabad also rejected the authenticity of a video circulating on social media, which Afghanistan allegedly cited as evidence of Pakistani involvement, describing the footage as staged.
Reuters said it could not independently verify the casualty figures, the Afghan ministry’s account or the video.
The latest incident comes amid growing tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Islamabad has repeatedly accused Kabul of allowing armed groups to operate from Afghan territory and carry out attacks inside Pakistan, allegations that Afghanistan has denied.
The dispute follows Pakistani airstrikes inside Afghanistan on September 21. Pakistan said the strikes targeted militants and claimed 28 fighters were killed, while Afghan officials said civilians were among those killed. The United Nations mission in Afghanistan confirmed three civilian deaths.
