SKUAST-K Celebrates Farmers’ Day: Honouring Innovators Transforming Kashmir’s Agriculture

Farmers' Day

SKUAST-Kashmir’s Directorate of Extension organised an inspiring celebration of Farmers’ Day to recognise farmers’ crucial contributions. Held at the Vice-Chancellor’s Secretariat, Shalimar, the event showcased the resilience, ingenuity, and determination of progressive farmers, entrepreneurs, and innovators in agriculture and allied industries.

A key highlight was the recognition of three Champion Farmers from SKUAST-K’s KVKs in the Kashmir Valley. These outstanding individuals transitioned from modest beginnings in subsistence farming to entrepreneurial success, generating employment and achieving multi-million turnovers. Their remarkable stories of transformation serve as motivation for aspiring entrepreneurs, especially the youth of Kashmir.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nazir A. Ganai lauded the farmers for their unwavering dedication, even amidst challenges. He emphasised SKUAST-K’s significant role in driving innovation and empowering farmers through advanced practices and sustainable models, such as Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs). Highlighting the agricultural potential of Jammu and Kashmir, he encouraged leveraging regional advantages to produce off-season crops and integrating modern technologies. Prof. Ganai also called for collective action to address constraints posed by small and marginal landholdings, advocating schemes like HADP and JKCIP alongside entrepreneurial support through the SKIIE Centre.
