The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed the presentation of a resolution seeking the restoration of the region’s special status.
The resolution, brought forward by the Deputy Chief Minister, Surinder Singh Choudhary of the National Conference, aims to address the loss of constitutional guarantees that once protected the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
During the supplementary session, Choudhary highlighted the importance of restoring the special status, which he described as essential for safeguarding regional identity and autonomy. The resolution calls on the Government of India to engage in dialogue with elected representatives from Jammu and Kashmir to explore mechanisms for reinstating these provisions.
The resolution, however, faced opposition from BJP leader Sunil Sharma, who objected to its inclusion, arguing that it was not part of the official business for the day.
Despite this opposition, Minister Sakina Masood Itoo seconded the resolution, indicating broad support within certain Assembly factions for the restoration effort.(Agencies)
