Chaos Erupts in J&K Assembly Over Waqf Bill; NC, Opposition Clash as Speaker Orders Eviction

Waqf Bill

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly descended into chaos on Tuesday as heated exchanges and verbal clashes broke out between National Conference (NC) legislators and members of Kashmir-based opposition parties over the controversial Waqf Bill.

The turmoil began moments after the House convened, with NC MLAs demanding that their adjournment motion on the Waqf Bill be taken up for discussion. Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), insisted on passing a resolution against the bill.

The situation escalated when PDP MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra stormed into the well of the House, demanding immediate passage of the resolution. Tensions peaked when NC’s Abdul Majid Larmi accused Parra of acting as an “RSS agent,” sparking a verbal spat between the NC and opposition lawmakers.

As Parra advanced toward the Speaker’s podium, the Speaker ordered the Marshals to evict him from the House. In a dramatic turn, People’s Conference president Sajad Lone intervened in an attempt to stop the eviction, but Parra was forcibly taken out.

The uproar didn’t end there. NC MLAs and Sajad Lone exchanged sharp words, with Lone accusing NC legislators of “doing theatrics” and calling it ironic that they were protesting against their own party’s Speaker.

“You are doing theatrics. It is irony that NC legislators are protesting against NC’s Speaker to befool people,” Lone lashed out during the heated argument.

As the protests grew louder, the Speaker maintained that the J&K Legislative Assembly had no authority to reverse decisions taken by the Parliament, firmly stating, “You cannot undo what Parliament has done.”

Amid the persistent commotion and slogans from both sides, the Speaker adjourned the House for 30 minutes to restore order.

The incident has further highlighted the growing divide among political parties in Jammu and Kashmir, especially on sensitive issues like the Waqf Bill.
