Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) president Altaf Bukhari on Friday hailed the Supreme Court’s historic decision to overrule the 1967 verdict that had denied Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) minority status.
The bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, passed the ruling by a 4:3 majority, marking a significant milestone in the long-standing legal battle for the university’s minority status.
Bukhari described the judgment as a positive development for AMU, which could now regain its minority status after several decades. “This decision opens the door for AMU to regain its rightful status as a minority institution, providing it with the autonomy it deserves,” he said.
The JKAP president added that the ruling would not only benefit the university but also help address the educational challenges faced by the Muslim community in India.
The recognition of AMU’s minority status is expected to allow the university greater freedom in administration and curriculum development, as well as making it eligible for government grants and aid reserved for minority institutions. Bukhari expressed hope that this judgment would pave the way for a stronger and more inclusive educational environment at AMU. (KNS)
