Sajad Lone on Wednesday criticized the central government for commemorating Jammu and Kashmir’s change in status from a state to a Union Territory (UT), describing it as an affront to the people of the region.
Taking X lone said “Why should they rub salt into the wounds of the people of J and K? First, they relegate the politically most empowered state in India to a UT. And now they have the audacity to celebrate it, commemorate it.”
He urged the government to abstain from such commemorations, which he believes highlight the “collective servitude of the people of J and K.” Lone stated that the UT status either implies that the people of Kashmir are incapable of managing their own affairs or that they are not trusted to do so, placing responsibility on the central government to clarify its stance.
Lone suggested that, instead of celebrating, this day should be remembered as a “day of disempowerment.” He appealed to the elected representatives to stand up against the central government, stating, “It is a humble appeal to the elected government, to stop taking the knee in Delhi. And stop beating drums of triumphalism. There is no triumph.”
He concluded by warning that such commemorations are pushing the people of Jammu and Kashmir “to the brink” and are essentially acts of “humiliation.” (KNS)
