ECI Begins Preparations for Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Elections, Invites Applications for Common Symbols

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated steps to conduct assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir by inviting applications for the allocation of common symbols to registered unrecognised parties.
Under Para 10B of the Election Symbols (Reservation & Allotment) Order, 1968, the ECI is now accepting applications for common symbols for the general election to the Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, effective immediately.
This move by the ECI to seek applications from registered unrecognised parties for common symbols signals that the assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir are approaching. The Supreme Court had mandated in December 2023 that the poll body must hold assembly elections in the Union Territory by September 30, 2024.
