Jammu and Kashmir Police Register FIR Against Scurrilous Social Media Communication

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have initiated legal action in response to complaints from senior women officials regarding malicious content circulating on social media platforms. The content, disseminated on various platforms including WhatsApp, contains baseless and derogatory allegations aimed at tarnishing the reputation and integrity of these women as well as public institutions.

In an official statement, the police disclosed that numerous complaints were lodged by senior female functionaries holding public office, along with supporting evidence. The scurrilous communication, purportedly authored by someone named ‘Manish Sharma’ of Pir Panjal Times, prompted the police to register a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.

The seriousness of the matter is underscored by the involvement of the Crime Branch of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, which has taken up the investigation. The registered case encompasses sections 467, 471, 500, and 509 of the IPC, along with section 66C of the IT Act.

The police emphasized their commitment to addressing such incidents, which not only target individual public figures but also undermine the credibility of government organizations. This swift action reflects the authorities’ determination to combat the spread of false and damaging information on social media platforms.
