Amidst the heated atmosphere leading up to the Lok Sabha elections, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched scathing allegations against the BJP-led central government. She claims that Aadhaar cards for citizens in her state are being deactivated deliberately, just before the crucial polls. Banerjee has pledged staunch support for the recipients of state-run welfare schemes, ensuring that they receive their entitled benefits regardless of their Aadhaar card status.
Expressing grave concern over the reported deactivation of Aadhaar cards across various districts in Bengal, Banerjee cautioned the public about a potential concerted effort by the BJP-led Centre to disrupt access to crucial benefits such as those offered by the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme and free ration, particularly in the run-up to the elections.
Emphasizing her government’s unwavering dedication to social welfare, Banerjee guaranteed protection for every beneficiary against any adverse impacts resulting from the alleged Aadhaar card deactivation.
In a show of solidarity, Banerjee also reiterated her support for the ongoing farmers’ protest, applauding their resilience while condemning any instances of violence they encounter. The ‘Dilli Chalo’ march by farmers from states like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh aims to exert pressure on the Central government to address key demands, notably the legal assurance of minimum support prices for their agricultural produce.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal government is under fire from the BJP over recent incidents of rape and violence against women in Sandeshkhali. Allegations implicating Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders in these incidents have led to protests, with villagers accusing the police of apathy.
In response to mounting pressure, the West Bengal police have announced the inclusion of gang rape charges under the Indian Penal Code against TMC leaders Uttam Sardar and Shibaprasad Hazra, in an effort to address the growing concerns of the affected community.
