4th National Lok Adalat 2024: Successful Settlement of Thousands of Cases Across Kashmir Districts

In line with the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) calendar, and under the guidance of the Jammu and Kashmir Legal Services Authority, the 4th National Lok Adalat for 2024 was held on Saturday across the District Courts of Kashmir. This initiative, overseen by Justice Tashi Rabstan, Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, and Justice Atul Sreedharan, Executive Chairman of the J&K Legal Services Authority, aimed to resolve various disputes amicably and alleviate the pressure on regular courts.

Lok Adalat provides an alternative dispute resolution method for cases pending in courts or at the pre-litigation stage. It is designed to reduce the backlog of cases while ensuring timely justice. Cases addressed in this Lok Adalat spanned civil, criminal, cheque bounce, bank issues, MACT, land compensation, matrimonial, electricity, and pre-litigation matters.

In Baramulla, the 4th National Lok Adalat was inaugurated by Jawad Ahmad, Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA). With 11 benches set up across the district, including four at the District Court Complex and others in Sopore, Pattan, and other areas, a total of 9,706 cases were presented. Of these, 8,806 cases were successfully resolved, resulting in settlements worth Rs. 62,23,913.

Anantnag’s event was led by Tahir Khurshid Raina, Chairman of DLSA. At the District Court Complex Anantnag, 4 benches were formed, and 2,272 cases were reviewed. 1,706 of these cases were resolved, totaling Rs. 5,17,72,333 in settlements.

Srinagar’s 4th National Lok Adalat was coordinated by Jaffer Hussain Beg, Principal District & Sessions Judge and Chairman of DLSA Srinagar. With 15 benches across various courts, a significant number of cases were settled, amounting to Rs. 65,38,19,921. This included settlements in specialized cases such as MACT and POCSO, alongside cheques valued at Rs. 1,02,50,000.

In Ganderbal, under the supervision of Abdul Nasir, Chairman of DLSA, three benches facilitated the settlement of 951 cases, resolving 751 with a settlement total of Rs. 63,04,030.

Budgam’s event was led by O.P. Bhagat, Chairman of DLSA, where eight benches took up 4,301 cases, of which 939 were settled, totaling Rs. 2,03,40,078.

Pulwama’s Lok Adalat, overseen by Naseer Ahmad Dar, Chairman of DLSA, saw 1,225 cases presented, with 570 resolved and Rs. 3,52,47,206 awarded.

In Kulgam, chaired by Aijaz Ahmad Khan, six benches resolved 597 of 1,310 cases, distributing Rs. 1,89,32,025 in settlement amounts.

Kupwara’s Lok Adalat, managed by Shazia Tabasum, Chairperson of DLSA, saw 561 cases, of which 272 were resolved, totaling Rs. 52,84,100 in settlements.

Shopian’s event, led by Mehmood Ahmad Chowdhary, Chairman of DLSA, saw the resolution of 181 out of 295 cases with Rs. 61,19,032 awarded in settlements.

In total, across all districts, the 4th National Lok Adalat of 2024 facilitated the resolution of 127,087 cases, with a combined settlement amount of Rs. 65,38,19,921, showcasing the immense success of this alternative dispute resolution method.
