Former Director General of Police Dilbag Singh, who recently retired, made history during his tenure by eliminating more than 1,000 militants in Jammu and Kashmir. Appointed as the DGP on September 7, 2018, amidst challenging circumstances, Singh’s remarkable leadership led to the successful handling of various crises, including the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir.
Under Singh’s watchful eye, a staggering 1,055 terrorists met their end, while 58 chose to surrender, and 1,448 terrorist supporters were apprehended. This period also saw numerous accolades showered upon the Jammu and Kashmir Police, including the prestigious Ashok Chakra, three Kirti Chakra awards, 13 Shaurya Chakra honors, and an impressive 887 police medals.
The security landscape in Jammu and Kashmir underwent a transformation during Singh’s tenure. For the first time in over three decades, the region experienced a significant decline in bandh calls and hartals. Educational and business activities continued without disruption, and the local population enjoyed a semblance of normalcy, with numerous positive developments occurring in the Union Territory.
Furthermore, Singh’s tenure witnessed a crackdown on the drug trade, resulting in the arrest of 11,725 individuals involved in illegal narcotics activities. A staggering 98,249 kg of narcotic and psychotropic substances, including 741 kg of heroin, were seized during this period.
The investigative capacity of the Jammu and Kashmir Police was significantly enhanced, with the establishment of new units such as the State Investigation Agency (SIA), Special Investigation Unit (SIU), Economic Offence Wing (EOW), and Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF). Dilbag Singh’s legacy is marked by unparalleled achievements in restoring peace and security in the region.
