Kishtwar Flash Flood: Somnath Missing After Disaster, Family Appeals to Government as Rescue Efforts Continue

A family in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district is living in shock and grief after their relative, Somnath, went missing during the devastating flash flood triggered by a cloudburst on August 14. The disaster struck during the Machail Mata Yatra pilgrimage, leaving around 55 people dead and dozens missing.

Somnath’s son, Pawan Kumar, recounted the terrifying moments when the flood hit. He said they were working at their hotel, serving food to visiting tourists, when the water suddenly surged.

“At that time, we were in the hotel we had set up, serving tourists. Suddenly, there was a flood. We ran for safety, and when we looked back, nothing was left,” Pawan told ANI.

After the chaos, the family could not locate Somnath. “When we looked for our father, he was not there. We thought he must have come home, but he wasn’t. Then we understood that he had become a victim of the flood,” he said, urging authorities to speed up search operations.

“The police are saying that they are looking for him, but nothing has been found so far. We request the government to help us find our father as soon as possible,” Pawan added.

Meanwhile, security forces have intensified rescue and relief operations across the region. General Officer Commanding (GOC) Counter Insurgency Force Delta, Major General A. P. S. Bal, highlighted the Indian Army’s rapid response.

“The Indian Army was the first to respond to this disaster, reaching the site within 45 minutes. All the security forces are trying their best to rescue as many people as possible and provide relief to those affected,” he said.

The Indian Army is spearheading operations on the ground, supported by the NDRF, SDRF, police, BRO, and local administration. Rescue teams are continuing their search for those missing, as families like Somnath’s wait anxiously for answers.
