Former JKNC MLA Kafil-ur-Rehman Joins PDP, Vows to Advocate for Karnah’s Development
In a major political development in Jammu and Kashmir, Kafil-ur-Rehman, a seasoned politician and two-time MLA from Karnah constituency, has officially joined the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP).
The announcement was made on Sunday by PDP spokespersons, accompanied by a warm welcome from former Chief Minister and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, who praised Rehman’s deep-rooted connection with the people of Karnah and his decades-long service in public life.
“Kafil-ur-Rehman’s decision to join JKPDP reflects our shared commitment to empowering the people of Jammu & Kashmir. His experience and dedication will strengthen our mission to ensure dignity, unity, and inclusive progress across the region,” Mehbooba Mufti said in a statement.
Born and raised in Karnah, Kupwara district, Kafil-ur-Rehman began his political career with the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC). He was first elected as an MLA in 2002 and again in 2008, defeating Ab Rehman Bhadana of the JK Awami National Conference. His tenure was marked by strong advocacy for border area development and the welfare of the Pahari-speaking community.
Rehman expressed gratitude for the reception he received upon joining the PDP and reaffirmed his commitment to the party’s ideology of “Kashmir First.”
“I am deeply honoured to become a part of the JKPDP under the leadership of Ms. Mehbooba Mufti. My focus will remain on serving the people of Karnah and ensuring their voices are heard at every level,” he stated.
Karnah, situated near the Line of Control (LoC), is a strategically important but often neglected region with specific developmental and security challenges. The PDP said Rehman’s inclusion would bring renewed energy to addressing such regional issues within the party’s broader political and developmental vision.
“Kafil-ur-Rehman brings invaluable experience and renewed momentum to our movement for restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s distinct identity while fostering peace, dialogue, and inclusive governance,” the PDP spokesperson added.
The party further noted that it remains committed to building a truly inclusive platform that represents all communities across the Union Territory, particularly those in far-flung and border areas like Karnah.
