J&K Police observe mark the ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’, Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a comprehensive series of awareness and outreach programmes across the Kashmir Valley. The initiative aimed to reaffirm the region’s collective commitment towards building a drug-free society and highlighted the force’s zero-tolerance policy against narcotics.
The central event was held at the Youth Development and Rehabilitation Center (YDRC) Eidgah, Srinagar. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Mohammad Muzafer Khan, Director of the YDRC, who extended greetings to the dignitaries and participants. The event was graced by SO to DIG CKR (SP) Shri Peer Zahoor Ahmad as the Chief Guest, alongside SP North Shri Showkat Ahmad, SDPO Khanyar, and other senior officials.
In his address, Shri Peer Zahoor Ahmad emphasized the urgent need for collective community action to prevent drug addiction, urging society to be vigilant and compassionate in supporting those affected. SP North Shri Showkat Ahmad also spoke on the devastating consequences of drug abuse, particularly among youth, and the role of community support and rehabilitation.
Participants at the event expressed their gratitude to the YDRC for offering an accessible and impactful rehabilitation facility. They shared personal insights and acknowledged the Centre’s role in steering individuals towards recovery and reintegration into society.
Alongside the main event, awareness rallies, debates, seminars, and public engagement campaigns were held across various districts including Shopian, Anantnag, Budgam, Kulgam, Kupwara, Handwara, Ganderbal, and at the IRP 6th Battalion Headquarters in PCR Kashmir. These events saw active participation from youth, students, civil society, and police officials.
In Srinagar, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) Kashmir, in collaboration with the Kashmir Reform and Social Foundation (KRSF), organized a major rally under the theme “Choose Life, Not Drugs”. The rally began at Exhibition Ground, Jahangir Chowk and culminated at Ghanta Ghar, Lal Chowk, symbolizing a strong public stand against drug abuse.
Throughout these programmes, J&K Police officers engaged directly with the public, particularly the younger generation, encouraging them to become ambassadors for a drug-free Kashmir. All district heads reiterated that the police will continue to take stringent legal action against drug trafficking while simultaneously advancing community-based awareness and rehabilitation efforts.
This observance underscores J&K Police’s holistic strategy — combining enforcement with education, outreach, and support — to counter the growing menace of drug addiction and safeguard the region’s future.
