YouTuber Neha Singh Rathore in Hot Water: FIR Filed for Alleged Derogatory Remarks Against PM Modi
Popular Bhojpuri folk singer and YouTuber Neha Singh Rathore faces legal trouble after an FIR was lodged against her at Varanasi’s Lanka Police Station for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The complaint, filed by Sudhir Singh, president of the social organization Shri Hanuman Sena, accuses Rathore of calling PM Modi a “coward” and comparing him to “General Dyer,” the British officer infamous for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

The FIR, registered under Sections 197(1)(a), 197(1)(d), and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), follows a video posted by Rathore that sparked outrage among local residents and Hindu organizations. Reports indicate that over 400 complaints were filed across multiple police stations in Varanasi, including Lanka and Bhelupur, alleging that her remarks insulted national sentiments and were amplified by Pakistani media, intensifying public anger.
A History of Controversy
This is not Rathore’s first brush with legal issues. In April 2025, she faced an FIR in Lucknow’s Hazratganj Police Station under sedition charges and IT Act violations for comments on the Pahalgam terror attack. In an X post dated April 23, she accused the Modi-led government of exploiting the attack for electoral gains, drawing parallels to the 2019 Pulwama attack. The complaint, filed by poet Abhay Pratap Singh, claimed her posts could incite caste-based hatred and anti-national sentiments.
Rathore, known for her viral song UP Mein Ka Ba in 2022, has a significant online presence with approximately 873,000 YouTube subscribers and 146,700 followers on X. Her outspoken social media posts often target political figures, making her a polarizing figure.
Public and Official Response
The Varanasi complaint alleges that Rathore’s video was deliberately provocative, with advocate Martand Pratap Singh accusing her of spreading social unrest and chaos through her platforms. He claimed her actions were supported by influential individuals aiming to stir unrest over sensitive issues like the Pahalgam attack.
On X, Rathore responded defiantly, stating, “When they couldn’t cross 400 seats, they filed 400 complaints against me! Kabir is my guru, and I’m not afraid of any Sikandar Lodi. Stop showing bravery on daughters, Modiji.” She denied claims of 500 complaints, with police confirming only one FIR was registered.
Varanasi police, led by Inspector Shivakant Mishra, are investigating the complaints, with further legal action pending. The Shri Hanuman Sena has demanded treason charges, alleging Rathore’s videos undermine national integrity.
Broader Context
The incident has reignited debates about freedom of speech versus responsible social media use, especially in politically sensitive regions like Varanasi, PM Modi’s parliamentary constituency. Rathore’s critics argue her remarks are inflammatory, while supporters view the FIR as an attempt to silence dissent. The controversy coincides with heightened political tensions ahead of upcoming elections, with posts on X reflecting polarized sentiments. Some users praise the Uttar Pradesh government’s action, while others see it as targeting a vocal critic.
