After Arrests in Punjab & Haryana, UP Businessman Arrested for Spying for Pakistan’s ISI, Smuggling Undercover for Years
A businessman named Shehzad from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Task Force (STF) in Moradabad for allegedly spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and engaging in cross-border smuggling. The arrest followed intelligence inputs indicating Shehzad’s involvement in espionage and illegal activities. Investigations revealed he had been secretly traveling to Pakistan for years, smuggling cosmetics, clothes, spices, and other items as a cover for his covert operations. He allegedly provided sensitive information related to India’s national security, along with money and Indian SIM cards, to ISI agents operating in India. Shehzad was also recruiting individuals from Rampur and other regions for the ISI. A case has been registered under Sections 148 and 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the ATS police station in Lucknow, and further legal proceedings are ongoing.
This arrest comes amid a broader crackdown, with eight individuals detained across Haryana, Punjab, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh in the past 11 days for similar espionage charges, including a Haryana-based YouTuber, Jyoti Malhotra, arrested days earlier. The arrests are linked to heightened India-Pakistan tensions following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people, prompting India’s Operation Sindoor.
