Ashoka University Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad Arrested

Why Was Ashoka University Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad Arrested Over Operation Sindoor Post?

On May 18, 2025, Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad, head of the Political Science department at Ashoka University, was arrested in Delhi by Haryana Police. The arrest stemmed from his social media posts concerning Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attacks.

Reasons Behind the Arrest

The arrest followed a complaint by a BJP Yuva Morcha leader, alleging that Mahmudabad’s posts were inflammatory and potentially incited communal disharmony. The Haryana State Commission for Women had earlier issued a notice to Mahmudabad, claiming his remarks disparaged women officers in the armed forces and promoted communal discord.

Content of the Controversial Posts

In his posts dated May 8 and 11, Mahmudabad critiqued the media portrayal of Operation Sindoor, particularly highlighting the roles of Colonel Sofia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh in military briefings. He questioned the authenticity of such representations, suggesting that without substantive structural changes, these could be seen as mere optics. Additionally, he drew attention to issues like mob lynchings and arbitrary demolitions, urging consistent protection for all Indian citizens.

Response from Mahmudabad and the Academic Community

Mahmudabad defended his statements, asserting they were misinterpreted and aimed at critiquing warmongering rhetoric while emphasizing the need to protect all citizens, including minorities. He expressed support for the Indian military’s measured approach and condemned terrorism.

The arrest has sparked widespread concern among academics and civil society groups, who view it as a threat to academic freedom and freedom of expression. Ashoka University’s Committee for Academic Freedom labeled the arrest as “disproportionate punishment made on flimsy grounds” and a “fundamental attack on academic freedom.”

Ashoka University stated that it is aware of the arrest and is cooperating with the authorities. The university emphasized that faculty members’ statements on personal social media accounts are made in their individual capacity and do not represent the institution’s views.
