Three Terrorists Killed in Encounter with Security Forces in South Kashmir’s Shopian

In a significant success for the security forces, three terrorists were killed in a fierce encounter on Tuesday in the Shukroo Keller forest area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district. The gunfight erupted after a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation based on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

According to a senior police official, the operation began early in the day when the forces zeroed in on the suspected location. As the search team approached, the hiding terrorists opened fire, triggering a heavy exchange of gunfire. The encounter lasted several hours before the security forces successfully neutralized all the militants.

“Three terrorists have been killed in the operation. Among them, two are believed to be foreign nationals while the third is a local,” the police official said, adding that their identities are being verified. The bodies of the slain terrorists have been recovered from the site, and arms and ammunition were also seized.

The operation was conducted with precision to avoid collateral damage, and no casualties or injuries to the security forces were reported during the exchange.

This encounter comes amid a renewed push by security agencies to root out terrorism from south Kashmir, a region that has witnessed heightened militant activity in recent years. The presence of foreign terrorists, according to officials, highlights ongoing attempts by Pakistan-based groups to infiltrate operatives into the Valley to revive militancy.

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Zone), V. K. Birdi, commended the forces for their coordination and bravery during the operation. “The successful operation in Shopian reflects our continuing commitment to eliminating terrorism from the region. Such efforts will continue to ensure peace and safety for the residents of Kashmir,” he said.

Search operations in the area have been intensified following the encounter, as authorities suspect the possibility of more militants in the vicinity.

The identities and affiliations of the killed terrorists are expected to be confirmed after further investigation. The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their localities.

Further updates are awaited as the operation area is being cleared and sanitized.
