Kokernag Villages Devastated by Floods and Cloudbursts: Urgent Relief Needed

People in Kokernag’s villages—like Ahlan Gadole, Darpora, and Kandi Nard in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district—are in serious trouble after days of heavy rain and cloudbursts. For the last three to four days, it has rained heavily, changing the whole area.

The Brengi stream (Nallah) overflowed, breaking its banks in many places and flooding nearby villages. Many homes close to the stream are now under water. Hundreds of kanals of farmland have been destroyed. Many families had to leave their homes in the middle of the night. Some are staying with relatives, while others have been moved to temporary shelters where there is a big shortage of food, clean water, and medicine.

Children, old people, and the sick are suffering the most and need urgent medical help, safe drinking water, and dry places to stay.

Mohammad Saeed Mir, an engineer from the Flood Control Department, said their team quickly rescued families and animals after the cloudburst. But the fast-flowing water is making it hard to clean and repair the damage. He said full repair work will start as soon as the weather gets better.

Local people are asking the government to quickly set up relief camps and send food and medicines so that no more lives are lost.
