Saudi Arabia Backs Syria’s Rebuilding Efforts After Historic Meeting with Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa

Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has hailed Saudi Arabia’s “genuine commitment” to supporting his country’s recovery after a crucial meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) in Riyadh on Sunday.
Al-Sharaa, accompanied by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, was warmly welcomed by Saudi officials, according to images from state broadcaster Al-Ekhbariya. Later, he held extensive talks with MBS, discussing security, stability, and strengthening bilateral ties, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.

“The meeting reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s sincere desire to assist Syria in shaping its future,” al-Sharaa said on Telegram.
Al-Sharaa, who assumed Syria’s presidency last Wednesday following the December ousting of Bashar al-Assad, received early congratulations from King Salman and MBS. Syria is looking to Gulf nations for financial backing to rebuild its war-torn infrastructure and boost its economy.
Speaking to Al Arabiya in December, al-Sharaa emphasized Saudi Arabia’s “critical role” in Syria’s reconstruction, calling it a prime investment opportunity. He also shared personal ties to the Kingdom, having spent his early childhood there.
Syria is pushing for the removal of long-standing international sanctions that have stifled its economy. The restrictions, initially imposed in 1979 by the United States due to Syria’s “state sponsor of terrorism” designation, were significantly expanded after the 2011 crackdown on anti-government protests.
Last month, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan visited Damascus, pledging diplomatic efforts to lift these sanctions. “We are in active discussions with key international players and are receiving positive responses,” he stated.
Diplomatic momentum continues to build, with high-profile visits to Syria. On Thursday, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani stressed the importance of forming an inclusive government to ensure stability and drive forward reconstruction and development.
As regional powers rally behind Syria’s new leadership, hopes are rising for a fresh era of rebuilding and economic revival.
