Addressing a press conference after unveiling the PDP’s election manifesto, party President Mehbooba Mufti reiterated the paramount importance of representing the grievances of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the Parliament. She emphasized that while other parties might focus on conventional issues like infrastructure and utilities, the PDP’s agenda revolves around highlighting the region’s transformation into what she described as an “open prison” since August 5, 2019.
Mufti lamented the direct contest between PDP and National Conference (NC) candidates, particularly in the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency. She blamed the NC for this electoral standoff, stating that it could have been avoided if they had consulted with the PDP instead of publicly asserting that the PDP was obsolete.
Reflecting on her party’s tumultuous journey since 2019, Mufti acknowledged the challenges and reprisals they faced for speaking out against the events unfolding in Jammu and Kashmir. Despite this, she affirmed her commitment to amplifying the region’s voice within the Parliament.
The PDP’s manifesto, according to Mufti, underscores the relentless onslaught on the collective identity, resources, and freedoms of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. She criticized the alleged exploitation of the region’s natural resources by external entities and emphasized the need for local empowerment and protection of tribal communities.
Furthermore, Mufti highlighted specific initiatives, such as advocating for a tunnel on the Mughal Road to ensure all-weather connectivity, and called for an end to what she perceived as victimization based on suspicion.
Responding to questions about the electoral rivalry between the PDP and NC, Mufti expressed regret over the situation, placing the blame squarely on the NC’s decision-making process. She asserted that the PDP had reluctantly entered the electoral fray due to NC’s dismissal of their relevance, which she claimed demoralized PDP supporters.
In sum, Mufti’s remarks underscored the PDP’s determination to advocate for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, despite facing challenges and electoral confrontations with rival parties.
