Home Minister Amit Shah

The search operation is still going on in Kathua to nab the terrorists after the encounter in the Sufian.

Authorities have placed the entire region on high alert as the search operation continues to track down potential threats.

Earlier during counter terror operation ‘Safiyan’ in the Kathua region, four Jammu and Kashmir police personnel lost their lives in the operation, while two terrorists were gunned down. Security forces recovered war-like stores from the encounter site.

The operation began on March 23, when locals reported the sighting of suspected Pakistani infiltrators in Sanyal.

Eid al-Fitr 2025: Saudi Arabia, UAE Confirm Sunday March 30

Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, is traditionally determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, leading to variations in its observance dates across different countries. In 2025, this variability is evident, with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar announcing Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the first day of Eid al-Fitr, following the moon’s sighting at the Sudair and Tamir observatories.

Conversely, nations such as Oman and Iran have declared that Eid al-Fitr will commence on Monday, March 31, 2025, due to the moon not being sighted in their regions. This difference underscores the reliance on local lunar observations to determine Islamic dates.

In India, the timing of Eid al-Fitr is also contingent upon the local sighting of the crescent moon. Given that the moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia on March 29, 2025, it is anticipated that India will observe Eid on Monday, March 31, 2025, aligning with the practice of celebrating the festival a day after Saudi Arabia.

However, the exact date in India will be confirmed based on the moon sighting on the evening of March 30, 2025. If the crescent moon is visible, Eid will be celebrated on March 31; otherwise, it may be observed on April 1, 2025.

The determination of Eid al-Fitr’s date through lunar observation highlights the rich diversity within the Islamic world, as different communities may celebrate on varying days based on regional moon sightings.

J&K Students Association Urges NCW to Restore Special Cells for Women Amid Funding Halt

Jammu and Kashmir Students Association

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association on Saturday has written to the National Commission for Women (NCW), seeking immediate intervention to restore and institutionalize special cells for Women in Jammu and Kashmir. The move follows the abrupt discontinuation of these vital support units due to the cessation of funding from the NCW, leaving thousands of women without crucial protection and assistance.

The closure of these critical Special Cells has raised serious concerns about the future of vulnerable women who rely on these services for safety and support.

Established in 2021 under the initiative “Violence-Free Home – A Woman’s Right,” these Special Cells were set up in police stations across all 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Implemented by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in collaboration with the J&K Home and Social Welfare Departments, the project provided essential psycho-social-legal support to survivors of gender-based violence.

In its letter to the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar, the association stated that the initiative played a critical role in offering legal aid, crisis intervention, and rehabilitation services to vulnerable women.

Since its inception, the Special Cells have assisted 9,791 survivors of violence (from November 1, 2021, to January 31, 2025). The initiative also conducted 1,581 awareness and training programs, educating communities on legal rights and protective laws for women and children.

The project was managed by a team of 40 trained social workers (two per district) and two regional coordinators, all holding Master’s degrees in Social Work and possessing years of experience in handling cases of violence against women.

However, with the NCW’s decision to withdraw funding, thousands of women currently receiving support will be left vulnerable and without recourse. Many will find their cases abandoned mid-process, facing immense hardship in their fight for justice. The abrupt closure of these services would be a severe setback in the fight against gender-based violence, leaving countless women without structured protection.

The Special Cells for Women were instrumental in addressing violence against women, bridging gaps in justice delivery, and providing rehabilitation to survivors. The teams delivered professional, compassionate, and effective services, offering legal aid, counseling, and rehabilitation support.

This ensured that women affected by violence had access to justice, protection, and the necessary resources to rebuild their lives, the association said.

National Convenor of the Association, Nasir Khuehami, said that despite the project’s impact, the NCW’s decision to withdraw funding has put thousands of women at risk, leaving them without support. He stressed that the abrupt shutdown of these Special Cells is a severe setback in the fight against gender-based violence, forcing many victims to abandon their cases mid-process.

In its letter, the association highlighted the indispensable role played by the Special Cells in addressing violence against women, bridging justice delivery gaps, and rehabilitating survivors. The association emphasized that the closure of these services would exacerbate structural inequalities, deter women from reporting crimes, and embolden perpetrators.

Khuehami said, “The dismantling of these Special Cells is not just a policy misstep; it is a political and moral failure that exposes the administration’s apathy toward gender justice.”

The association urged the NCW to extend financial support for at least another year while the state government finalizes the institutionalization of the project. “Ensuring continued support for these Special Cells is not just a matter of policy but a moral imperative to protect and uphold the rights, dignity, and well-being of women,” the association stated, urging the NCW to take decisive action in restoring and institutionalizing these crucial services.

The association urged NCW Chairperson Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar to intervene immediately and extend financial support for the Special Cells for at least another year while the state government finalizes its institutional process. “We urge the NCW to take decisive action in protecting the rights of women in J&K and ensuring that the fight against gender-based violence remains a top priority,” it added.

Fourth Policeman’s Body Recovered as Operation Continues for Third Day

Security forces on Saturday extended the ongoing search operation to new areas after the body of the fourth policeman and two slain terrorists were recovered from the scene of a gunfight in a remote forested area in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

Body of head constable Jagbir Singh was retrieved from Ghati Juthana forest in Rajbagh and was shifted to Jammu where a wreath laying ceremony for the deceased was held near police headquarters Gulshan Ground, they said.

The officials said bodies of two Pakistani terrorists, believed to be affiliated with proscribed Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit, were also recovered along with war-like stores.

The encounter in the area began on Thursday morning and continued throughout the day on Friday. A total of four policemen and two recently infiltrated terrorists were killed, while the search for other members of the terrorist group is continuing for the third day on Saturday.

Earlier, officials had put the death toll of terrorists at three but the Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat late Friday evening clarified that only two terrorists and four policemen were killed in the encounter.

Bodies of three policemen — Balwinder Singh Chib, Jaswant Singh and Tariq Ahmed — were retrieved last evening and their wreath laying ceremony led by the DGP was held at District Police Lines Kathua before their bodies were handed over to their families.

The officials said security forces are sanitising the scene of the encounter while the search operation was extended to adjoining areas including Billawar heights to track down and neutralize the terrorists.

Gunfire and deafening sounds of explosions were also heard near the scene of the encounter this morning as well but it was later clarified that the firing was deliberate by the security forces as part of the counter terror strategy and the blasts were the result of disposing off littered explosive material, the officials said.

“Relentless operations since March 27 have led to the elimination of two terrorists and recovery of war-like stores. The operation continues,” Army’s rising star corps.

The DGP confirmed this was the same group of terrorists which was earlier intercepted in Saniyal village near International border in Hiranagar sector on March 23 evening but managed their escape, resolving that his force will ensure that all terror groups are appropriately dealt with.

Talking to reporters after the wreath laying ceremony in Kathua late Friday evening, the DGP said their loss will not be compensated by words but by deeds.

“Neither the intention of J&K Police has weakened nor is our goal far away from us. Our goal is clear and so the intention. There is no lack of passion as J&K police is the only force in the country which is writing its history in golden words by its bravery and sacrifice.

“We will not sleep or take rest as long as our impure neighbour (Pakistan) and its (terror) organizations are not dealt with appropriately. This war is going on and will continue. There will be no dilution in our intention,” the police chief said.

Prabhat said two Pakistani terrorists were eliminated in the initial gunfight but when the police party was climbing the hill, the terrorists, taking advantage of their dominating position, killed four jawans.

The People’s Anti-Fascist Front, a shadow outfit of Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), has claimed involvement in the encounter.Senior CPI(M) leader and legislator M Y Tarigami, meanwhile, extended his condolences to the families of the four police personnel who died in the encounter.

Senior officer Among Five Security Personnel injured in Kathua Encounter

Indian Army in Kathua encounter

Four policemen, including a senior officer, were injured in an ongoing encounter between security forces and terrorists in the Juthana area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district on Thursday, officials said.

Officials said that during the exchange of gunfire between the security forces and the terrorists, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dheeraj Katoch and three other policemen sustained injuries.

The injured policemen were shifted to the hospital for treatment. There are reports of a terrorist being killed in this gunfight, but there is still no official confirmation of this.

After massive searches during the last four days, firing exchanges had started again on Thursday morning between the joint forces and the terrorists in Kathua.

“Contact has been re-established with militants in the forest area of Sufain under police station Rajbagh in Kathua,” an official said.Security forces launched a search operation in the area during the early hours.

Massive searches initially started in the Sanyal village of Hiranagar Tehsil and spread to other adjoining areas as the terrorists had not responded to any speculative firing by the security forces after the initial exchange of fire on Sunday.

A local woman informed the police on Tuesday that two men, in army uniform, asked her for water while they were having food in the area.

This prompted the area to be cordoned off. Security was tightened along the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway in the Samba-Kathua section, with increased vigilance on border roads, officials said.

The search operation was carried out in multiple areas from Sanyal to Ding Amb and beyond, covering several kilometers. The operation, involving the Army, the National Security Guard, the Border Security Force, police, the Special Operations Group, and the Central Reserve Police Force, armed with technical and surveillance equipment, is supported by helicopters, UAVs, drones, bulletproof vehicles, and sniffer dogs.

Security agencies have questioned several persons in various areas and picked up three suspects for questioning, the officials said.

During the search operation on Tuesday, security forces recovered two grenades among other material. The tracksuits found among a large cache of ammunition and other materials in the Sanyal forests were identical to those worn by the four Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) terrorists killed in the Assar forests and Doda in June and August last year.

Local people in the areas have joined the operation by security forces and urged those living in other areas to remain vigilant and inform of any movement of suspected persons in their areas.

Several village heads have requested people to come forward with information about the movement of terrorists in their areas.

The operation, led by the Jammu and Kashmir DGP Nalin Prabhat, was launched on Sunday evening in the Hiranagar sector following an encounter between security forces and terrorists hiding in a nursery.

The Special Operations Group of police initiated the operation after receiving intelligence about terrorists hiding inside a ”dhok” (local enclosure) in a nursery in Sanyal village, approximately five km from the International Border with Pakistan, officials said.

The hiding terrorists opened fire on the police team, resulting in a gunfight lasting over half an hour. Reinforcements were promptly dispatched as a manhunt began to apprehend the terrorists believed to have infiltrated on Saturday via either a ravine route or a newly constructed tunnel. Initial firing did not cause any casualties, and the area remained under tight security overnight before security forces moved in again at dawn, officials said.

The International Border between India and Pakistan is situated in the district, and in the past, terrorists have attempted to sneak into the Indian side over the border.

Recently in Kathua, three civilians — Darshan Singh, 40, Yogesh Singh, 32, and Varun Singh, 14 — went missing on March 5 while returning from a wedding in Marhoon village.

Their bodies were discovered on March 8 near a waterfall on the edge of an escarpment in a wooded area following an extensive search involving the Army, police, drones, and sniffer dogs.

“The brutal killing of three relatives by terrorists in the Bani area of Kathua is extremely sad as well as a matter of great concern,” Union Minister Jitendra Singh said in a post on X.

In the wake of the incident, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan came to Jammu on March 9 and chaired a high-level security meeting regarding the safe and peaceful Amarnath Yatra beginning on July 3 and the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), which is shortly being inaugurated.

The Home Secretary laid emphasis on the security situation in the Jammu division while giving detailed directions on the overall security situation in the UT.
